East Lansing High School Lockdown Today – Following Second “Swatting” Incident in Four Days
East Lansing High School was placed on lockdown on May 5 after school officials received a suspicious phone call, marking the second swatting-related incident targeting the campus within a four-day period.
According to Superintendent Dori Leyko, the school’s main office received the call at approximately 2:45 p.m., prompting an immediate lockdown. District officials acted quickly in coordination with the East Lansing Police Department (ELPD) to ensure student and staff safety while the situation was assessed.
Authorities later determined that the call originated from outside the state and was not credible. Law enforcement described the incident as a “swatting” event—where false reports are made to trigger an emergency response. Officials also noted that another school in Michigan received a similar call around the same time, though no real threat was identified.
As a precaution, all evening activities at the high school were canceled, and students were dismissed and evacuated once authorities confirmed the building was secure. Police conducted a full sweep of the campus before clearing it for normal operations.
District leaders confirmed that other schools in the area, including the elementary school, continued with regular dismissal schedules, while some extracurricular activities, such as middle school track practice planned at the high school, were canceled.
This latest incident follows a similar event on May 1, when another false report led to a lockdown and evacuation at the same school. Officials at the time also attributed that situation to swatting.
School administrators and law enforcement continue to investigate the series of hoax calls, which have caused repeated disruptions and concern within the East Lansing community.
