John Byun Obituary, Eugene OR, Death – Beloved Choral Director and Music Mentor Passes Suddenly
The music community mourns the sudden loss of John Byun, an esteemed choral conductor, private voice instructor, and cherished mentor, who passed away unexpectedly on the afternoon of May 6. Beloved by his family, students, and colleagues, Byun’s passing has left an indelible mark on all who had the privilege of working with him.
For over 13 years, Byun inspired countless students with his artistry, humor, and unwavering dedication to music. Known for his meticulous yet encouraging teaching style, he shaped the careers of singers, directors, and ensembles across the nation. Former students describe him as a transformative figure, someone whose guidance went beyond music to cultivate character, confidence, and lifelong bonds.
“John changed my life in ways I cannot even articulate,” shared one mentee. “He saw something in me that pushed me to grow as a musician and choir director. His quiet, meaningful compliments were treasured, and his laughter and dad jokes made every rehearsal unforgettable.”
Byun’s influence extended far beyond individual mentorship. Through his work with alumni and community choirs, he fostered friendships, marriages, and world-class musical collaborations that exemplified his belief in the power of music to unite and inspire. His selection of challenging and innovative repertoire pushed singers to achieve excellence, and his presence at rehearsals and performances was both grounding and motivating.
