Devante Griffin and Klariza Tarango Obituary, Bayfield, CO Accident Death: Community Grieves Sudden Loss

A tragic single-vehicle rollover crash on Highway 160 has claimed the lives of 25-year-old Devante Griffin and 24-year-old Klariza Tarango of Farmington, New Mexico, while leaving a 5-year-old child injured but surviving, according to the Colorado State Patrol.

Troopers were called to the scene around 12:35 p.m. on Saturday after the wreckage was discovered just east of Bayfield near milepost 21. Investigators believe the crash actually occurred earlier, around 6 a.m. on Friday, but went unnoticed for more than 30 hours because the vehicle was hidden off the roadway down a steep embankment.

Authorities say the blue Chevrolet S10 was traveling eastbound on Highway 160 when it left the roadway for reasons still under investigation. The vehicle reportedly rolled down the south embankment multiple times before coming to rest on its roof. The crash site was not visible from the highway, delaying discovery of the incident.

When responders arrived, both Griffin and Tarango were found deceased at the scene. A 5-year-old girl, also inside the vehicle, survived the crash and was transported to a nearby hospital for treatment before later being released.

Colorado State Patrol confirmed that neither excessive speed nor impairment are currently suspected as contributing factors. The investigation remains ongoing as officials work to determine what caused the vehicle to leave the roadway. Possible factors under review include fatigue, distraction, road conditions, or mechanical issues.

Highway 160 was temporarily impacted while investigators processed the scene and documented evidence. The rural terrain and steep embankment are believed to have contributed to the delayed discovery of the wreckage.

The loss of two young adults and the injury of a child has deeply affected the Farmington and Bayfield communities, where family members and loved ones are now mourning and supporting the surviving child as she recovers.
